Yes, DHL uses its own airline. There are six main DHL airlines operating directly for DHL Express: European Air Transport Leipzig, DHL Air UK, DHL Air Austria, DHL Aero Expreso, SNAS/DHL, and Blue Dart Aviation. In addition, DHL collaborates with several chartered airlines to enhance its network. Due to being responsible for the major part of the network for Europe and for long-haul services to the Middle East and Africa, EAT plays a crucial role, managing a fleet of Boeing and Airbus freighters from its main location at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
European Air Transport Leipzig was founded in November 2005, assuming significant responsibilities from the former DHL Operations B.V. in Brussels after the relocation of DHL's European air freight hub to Leipzig/Halle in spring 2008. Initially focused on maintaining DHL-owned cargo aircraft, EAT Leipzig later completed the takeover of eleven operational aircraft from European Air Transport N.V., marking the final step in relocating DHL's main European air hub. The merger of European Air Transport N.V. into EAT Leipzig occurred in February 2010, with a change in the company's focus to encompass various aviation-related activities. The company received approval as a cargo airline in March 2010, operating from a large hangar at Leipzig/Halle Airport and supporting both DHL and other carriers in flight and ground operations. Ten years later the company's own Aviation Training Center opened, followed by its ATO approval in 2022.
DHL has several major hubs in Europe that serve as key logistics and distribution centers. These hubs are strategically located to facilitate efficient transportation operations. Some of the prominent DHL hubs in Europe include:
- Leipzig/Halle Airport (Germany): This is one of the main hubs for DHL Express in Europe, serving as the central hub for its European and international operations. Leipzig/Halle Airport is the home of EAT.
- East Midlands Airport (United Kingdom): DHL has a significant presence at East Midlands Airport, using it as a hub for air freight operations.
- Brussels Airport (Belgium): Brussels Airport is another important hub for DHL in Europe, supporting air cargo and logistics services.
- Cologne Bonn Airport (Germany): DHL has a major presence at Cologne Bonn Airport, utilizing it as a hub for cargo and freight operations.
- Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport (Italy): DHL has operations at this airport, contributing to its network in Europe.
